| About the Institute for Mental Health Research
Mental disorders are among the leading causes of disability in our society. Comparable to or exceeding physical illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis, disorders such as depression, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer’s disease prevent people from having fully satisfying lives and contributing to our community.
Discovering the causes of mental illness and identifying the factors that promote well-being and mental health are critical needs. Arizona responded to these challenges by establishing the Institute for Mental Health Research (IMHR) in 2001. The Institute is a progressive scientific and medical enterprise, the first multi-institutional, comprehensive, research organization of its kind, devoted to unlocking the secrets of the human mind.
Mission
The mission of the Institute for Mental Health Research is to accelerate the understanding, treatment and, ultimately, prevention of mental illnesses. The Institute will advance psychological health and well-being through research and education.
